During my
lifetime Glasgow, the city in which I was born and raised, has undergone
rapid
development. For every building that is knocked down one, a hundred, a
thousand, a million memories are torn down with it. As the banks of the
Clyde
turn from heavy industry to tourism, how many lives have been changed?
My
paintings reflect my thoughts and feelings on a lost history of place
and time
that only I remember. We all have these histories which one day will be
lost. I bring together drawings and photographs to create paintings that
depict a narrative of the interaction people have with their
surroundings. My studio based on the edge of the city centre and the East
end of Glasgow gives me the perfect environment to reflect this kaleidoscope
of
memory and place, helping me to capture a very distinct energy.
I use a
representative style of painting to draw people into a familiar scene
that they
can fuse with their own lives and imaginations. When I initially start
a new
work I paint in a loose manner and allow the painting itself to have a
history
of brushstrokes, layers and colours which reveal the mark of the human
hand. As
the painting progresses I instinctively begin to add more information
to
capture the form and complexity of certain elements of the image, eyes
are
always very important to me as they are a doorway into the soul of a human.
I
often feel that light and dark is evident in my work as Glasgow is a city
that is only ever sunny on a momentary basis and it’s these pockets
of light
that illuminate and transform our surroundings.
I am very
inspired by a range of Glasgow artists from the past to the present. I
really relate to Joan Eardley's paintings of Glaswegian children as well
as
contemporary artists such as Helen Wilson, Anthony Scullion, Herbert whone
and Stephen
Conroy.'
